Local retailer? Show us your best green!

“According to BIGinsight’s St. Patrick’s Day spending survey, 54.4 percent of Americans say they will celebrate the traditionally Irish holiday this year, the most in the survey’s nine-year history. Overall, the average person will spend about $35 on the holiday, totaling $4.6 billion.”

I <3 Retail is going green this week in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday and we want to see your best green goods! Bonus points if your showcase merchandise is at the $35 price point or below, but no worries if it’s not.

“Why the interest in St. Patrick’s Day”, you might ask?

“When asked how they will celebrate, eight in 10 will aim to avoid the traditional pinch by simply wearing green… BIGinsight’s Consumer Insights Director Pam Goodfellow says, ‘As a non gift-giving holiday, St. Patrick’s Day really brings out the fun in consumers every year, knowing they can splurge on gimmicky accessories like pins and buttons for their clothes and even home decor items to put their entire family in a festive spirit.’”

When consumers are poised to spend, Raleighwood Media Group’s retail marketing team wants them to shop with you! Send pictures, description, and prices for your best green goods to Lisa@IHeartRetail.com before Friday at 6:00pm for free inclusion in this week’s St. Patrick’s Day features on IHeartRetail.com!

All stats and quotes referenced in this post were found in the NRF’s Consumers get ‘lucky’ as St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday article, found here.

Glad to Say I Possess Most of these Habits

Especially this one:

They say the early bird gets the worm, but don’t forger the afternoon hawk gets the prairie dog; the evening fish gets the fly, and the night owl gets the rodent. Not everybody is their most productive in the morning. Work on your hardest tasks when your energy is at its individual peak. If that happens to be 2am then it’s 2am - working on your own terms is one of the perks of being an entrepreneur.

It doesn’t work for everyone, but if I get a stroke of creative genius at o’ dark thirty, then so be it.

Using Technology: Being a Brand on Google +

I read a funny tweet the day Google+ first launched about waiting for Google++.

That’s the stance I’m taking right now.

I’m not on Google+ and I’m ignoring invites to join.

Yes, as a marketer, I do care about knowing the ins and outs of this new network, but personally, as an individual, I just don’t care enough yet. (It’s that plate full thing, ya know?)

I have been reading up a bit on it, though, so that when the time comes, I’ll be ready to rock ‘n roll on Google+.

A colleague passed this on to me today: Connected (by Radio-Info.com) - An Introduction to Google+. Here’s the biggest takeaway I got from the piece:

Cautionary note for media companies [or any business/brand]: Be careful about jumping in head first on Google+ as a brand. Google says that it will have pages for brands later this year, and it’s discouraging brands from creating profiles before then. If you start now by creating a “personal page” for your brand, you might well be disappointed to find later this year that you have to recreate everything you’ve done in order to make it work in the new brand marketing paradigm that Google is still creating.

I’ll see y’all on Google+… someday.

Quotable: Tell the Truth

I’m not even a quarter way through this article and I had to quote it right off the bat. You gotta love working with honest folks. This quote is about how one advertising entrepreneur found he could work with multiple competing brands at one time:

Together we figured out a way we could work for nearly all of them. Simple really. It was called “Tell the the truth.” We told them: “We work for nearly all of you.”

And it was easier than you might think. We knew the lingua franca and had zero learning curve. We played different roles with different companies. Some were completely design clients, some all advertising, others were both. They all had different messaging needs and were not overly hung up on agency exclusivity. - Craig Brimm, Closing My Shop Was Hard, but Not the End of the World

Amen to that and to the road that Craig is traveling these days having gone back to work with someone else’s agency, without the desire to own it.

Quotable: The Golden Rule and Twitter

I was just perusing through Twitter’s cool new resource for media and journalists, Twitter for Newsrooms (#TfN), and came across this nice “nugget”:

Her Tweets also define how the Golden Rule applies to Twitter. Often she will suggest other reporters to follow and tweets articles from other outlets. — in regards to beat reporter Melissa Bell

In my humble opinion, I’ve never believed that twitter is for one-way self-promotion (nor any other online medium, for that matter) and the above quote is a great way to illustrate that. Who says peers in your industry (which we may sometimes call “the competition”) can’t make great online friends?

Quotable: Passion and People

This great quote is not actually about the McKinney project (Twerrible Towel) that was featured, but rather their “Spent” interactive campaign that was designed to raise awareness of homelessness.

“Ms. Nicholson also worked on Spent, a self-driven interactive campaign created for agency client Urban Ministries of Durham that used gaming and social media to educate people about homelessness. She says it taught her that ‘if you have a good idea and a ton of passion, people will line up to help you make it a reality’.”
- via Call It the Rise of the Side Projects, Advertising Age

Good ideas. Passion. People. I love it.
